Railway scrap

The previous series of auctions did not take place due to insufficient bidders

On May 28, 2025, Ukrainian Railways JSC (UZ) re-auctioned 12 thousand tons of ferrous scrap with a total value of UAH 87.31 million on Prozorro.Sale. The previous series of auctions failed due to insufficient bidders.

In total, 33 lots with raw materials with an average value of UAH 2.6 million were presented for sale. The types of scrap include 3 (railway wheelset axles, railcar parts), 10 (shavings), 4 (worn-out brakes), 1 (railcar body parts), 312 (springs), and 9 (general scrap).

The auctions are scheduled for 11:20 a.m. on June 5. Bids will close at 20:00 on June 4. The scrap will be located in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Poltava, Odesa and Chernihiv regions.

This is the second time that the current lots are being auctioned. The previous auctions were scheduled for May 26. The average price per ton of raw materials ranged from 5.32 thousand UAH/t to 7.6 thousand UAH/t (7.2 thousand UAH/t on average from 33 lots). At the same time, the last auction in 2023 was held at the price of 5.1-6.5 thousand UAH/t (6.35 thousand UAH/t on average from 53 lots). Thus, the most valuable type of scrap (Type 3) has risen in price by more than UAH 1 thousand.

Among the bidders for the auctions were Zakhid-Tekhnomedbud LLC, Lyon Agro, and NDMZ LLC.

As GMK Center previously reported, Ukrzaliznytsia resumed trading in scrap on May 16 this year. Prior to that, the company had not sold raw materials since September 2023. In the first 9 months of that year, the railway operator sold only 76.4 kt of scrap, compared to 113 kt in 2022, when it was supposed to sell 170 kt.

Recently, the Cabinet of Ministers simplified the procedure for disposing of property for Ukrainian Railways, according to which the company can independently, without government approval, decide on the disposal of property if its book value does not exceed UAH 500 million.

This decision is expected to enable UZ to receive over 218.6 thousand tons of ferrous scrap (worth UAH 1.6 billion) and 3.8 thousand tons of non-ferrous scrap (worth UAH 233.4 million).
