Ukrainian Railways increased iron ore transportation to 2 million tons in June

In June 2023, Ukrainian Railways (UZ) increased the transportation of iron and manganese ore by 2.8% compared to June 2022 – up to 2 million tons. UZ press release reports about it.

Compared to May 2023, the transportation of heavy goods vehicles by rail increased by 2%. The share of ore in the total volume of transportation for the month was 16.1%.

In general, in June, Ukrainian Railways increased cargo transportation by 32% compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 12.4 million tons. Compared to May, this indicator increased by 8%.

«We are ending the next month with a positive result of the main business – cargo transportation. The June volumes and their growth strengthen our plan to break even and restore the railway industry,» said the Chairman of the UZ Board Evgen Lyashchenko.

Domestic cargo transportation in June 2023 increased by 40.6% y/y – up to 7.9 million tons, and export – by 24.3%, up to 4 million tons. Among the leaders in terms of transportation volumes, in addition to iron ore, there are the following cargoes:

  • grain – 2 million tons (+48.4% y/y);
  • construction materials – 3.1 million tons (+87% y/y);
  • hard coal – 2.3 million tons (+16.3% y/y).

During the month, UZ increased the average daily cargo load by 25.3% compared to the same period in 2022 – up to 387.4 thousand tons. Compared to May 2023, this indicator increased by 10%. At the same time, the average daily load of iron ore decreased by 2% y/y – to 64.97 thousand tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2022, Ukrainian Railways reduced transportation of iron and manganese ore by 59.2% compared to 2021 – to 41.7 million tons. Volumes of transportation of ferrous metals last year decreased by 57.8% y/y – to 9.2 million tons. In total, during the year UZ transported 150.6 million tons of cargo, which is 52.1% less compared to 2021.
