Turkey’s Kardemir has commissioned CCM No. 2 with an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons

On April 3, the Turkish steelmaker Kardemir commissioned its new Continuous Casting Machine (CCM) No. 2, according to SteelOrbis.

The new CIG was supplied by the German SMS Group and has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million tons. The equipment is designed to produce semi-finished products of various sizes.

This step is part of the ongoing implementation of key projects, including the installation of a second vacuum degassing unit and a calibration block.

As the company noted, the investment aligns with its strategy to increase the share of high-value-added products in its production mix. The new unit, along with related investments, is expected to significantly improve product quality and operational efficiency.

Kardemir also aims to reach a total steel production volume of 3 million tons.

As a reminder, Kardemir plans to reduce emissions by 43% by 2037 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2053. In 2024, Kardemir implemented the third phase of its environmental investment program, valued at approximately $50 million, covering dust suppression systems, flue gas filtration, and wastewater treatment upgrades. Total environmental expenditures for the year amounted to $9.36 million. In 2024, the steel producer met 60.5% of its electricity needs through in-house generation.

As reported by GMK Center, Turkey’s steel exports in January–February 2026 fell by 13.5% compared to the same period in 2025, to 2 million tons.
