Turkey increased steel exports by 14.4% y/y in April

In April, Turkey increased steel exports by 14.4% y/y – to 1.2 million tons. In value terms, it increased by 6% y/y – to $813.1 million. This is according to the Turkish Steel Producers Association (TCUD).

In January-April 2025, exports increased by 17.3% compared to the same period in 2024, to 5 million tons.

Steel imports to Turkey in April decreased by 9.1% y/y (to 1.4 million tons) and by 13% y/y in value terms (to $1 billion). At the same time, in the first four months of the year, imports increased by 0.9% y/y – to 5.6 million tons, while the cost of imports increased by 7.6% y/y (to $3.4 billion).

In January-April, imports of billets to the country increased by 10.6% y/y, while imports of long products increased by 14.6% y/y.

Consumption of rolled products in the country in April decreased by 2.9% y/y – to 3 million tons, while in the first four months of this year it fell by 6.3% y/y – to 12 million tons.

According to the association, to ensure the sustainability of the Turkish steel sector, it is important to create alternative opportunities for scrap supplies, limit the growth of dumped imports from the Far East, and reform the customs processing regime to prioritize domestic supplies.

In 2024, Turkey increased steel exports by 27.6% y/y – to 13.4 million tons. Steel imports amounted to 17.4 million tons in 2024 (+1.7% y/y). Consumption of rolled steel in the country last year increased by only 0.6% year-on-year – to 38.3 million tons.
