Scrap supplies to steelmakers increased by 53.7% in January

In January 2021, scrap supplies to Ukrainian steelmaking companies increased by 53.7% to 283.7 thousand tons compared to January 2020,

according to UAVtormet association.

The largest scrap consumers in January were the following companies:

  • Metinvest’s iron and steel works and Dniprovskyi Iron and Steel Works — 171.5 thousand tons (+82.8% against January 2020);
  • Interpipe Steel — 44.6 thousand tons (+2.4%);
  • ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih — 58.1 thousand tons (+77.1%).

Presently, Ukrainian steelmakers are facing no scrap deficit. As of the end of January, scrap stocks at iron and steel works amounted to 170–175 thousand tons.

As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2020 scrap supplies to Ukrainian steelmaking companies shrank by 3.9% to 2.9 million tons compared to 2019. As of the end of December, scrap stocks at iron and steel works amounted to 170–175 thousand tons.
