Qarmet to build hot-dip galvanizing and polymer coating complex

Kazakhstan’s Qarmet has begun construction of a new hot-dip galvanizing and polymer coating complex, according to a company statement.

“The new lines will be an important step in the implementation of the strategic program to upgrade and expand the production capacities of Qarmet’s steelmaking division,” the company said.

The total investment in the project is about 84 billion tenge, and the complex is scheduled to be launched in 2027.

Belgian company John Cockerill, whose solutions are successfully used at the largest steel plants in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, was selected as the equipment supplier on a competitive basis.

Currently, the Qarmet metallurgical plant has two hot continuous galvanizing lines with a total capacity of 592,000 tons per year, as well as a polymer coating line (approximately 115,000 tons per year).

The new complex will increase the total output of galvanized steel to 844,000 tons per year and polymer-coated products to 254,000 tons per year, as well as expand the product range.

The company considers the new lines to be the most important element of the technological modernization of the enterprise. They will ensure the production of competitive, import-substituting products for construction, mechanical engineering, and infrastructure. The new complex will fully provide Kazakhstan with galvanized steel and polymer-coated metal.

This step will allow Qarmet to strengthen its position in the high-quality steel market, increase the share of high value-added products, and make a significant contribution to the development of metallurgy in Kazakhstan.

In August this year, Qarmet announced the construction of a new $700 million casting and rolling complex in Temirtau.
