Danieli selected as green technology supplier for Tata Steel IJmuiden

Italian equipment producer Danieli has been selected as a supplier of green technologies for the Dutch steel plant Tata Steel Ijmuiden, a subsidiary of global steelmaker Tata Steel. This is stated in a press release from Danieli.

According to the agreement, Danieli will build a direct reduced iron (DRI) plant in Ijmuiden using Energiron technology.

The contract provides for the design of the Energiron Zero Reformer plant with a capacity of up to 2.5 million tons per year of hot and cold DRI. The hot DRI will be fed to a new electric arc furnace (EAF) using Hytemp technology, which increases the energy efficiency of the new plant.

The selected DRP-EAF configuration will replace the existing blast furnace and coke oven, which will reduce CO2 emissions by 40%. Energiron’s technology includes a CO2 capture system and is hydrogen-ready.

«The Energiron direct reduction technology is the preferred choice in terms of energy efficiency and operational flexibility, allowing Tata Steel to produce the full product portfolio without compromising on quality and to become completely CO2 neutral,» the statement said.

Energiron is an innovative direct reduction technology jointly developed by Tenova and Danieli.

The capacity of the steel plant in Ijmuiden is estimated at 6 million tons of pig iron per year from two blast furnaces. BF No. 6 is capable of producing 2.5 million tons of pig iron per year. Steel production at the plant is estimated at 7.5 million tons per year. The company specializes in the production of cold-rolled, hot-dip galvanized and painted coils and tinned products.

As GMK Center reported earlier, the Dutch parliament recently supported the provision of about €3 billion in green subsidies to Tata Steel Ijmuiden. The government funds are to be used to decarbonize the plant and increase the sustainability of the country’s steel industry.
