Thanks to this, the company reduced dust emissions by 90% and carbon dioxide emissions by 42% compared to 2004
The global steel company ArcelorMittal has invested more than PLN 10.5 billion ($2.6 billion) in Polish assets over the past 20 years. A significant portion of the funds was invested in environmental projects. This is stated in a press release from ArcelorMittal Poland.
The investments helped reduce dust emissions by the company’s Polish division by 90% and carbon dioxide by 42% compared to 2004.
«The steel concern’s units have undergone a number of changes over the last two decades: the company implemented new technologies, in line with increasingly strict EU directives, decommissioned outdated installations and changed many production processes to those that have a significantly lower impact on the environment,” the statement said.
ArcelorMittal Group intends to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The interim goal for European plants is to reduce CO2 emissions by 35% by 2030 compared to 2018.
«Decarbonization is a huge challenge for the steel industry across Europe. In order to make it successful, several conditions must be met, including: access to large-scale, renewable energy at competitive prices. We know that the transformation will be a long-term process, so we are working intensively to limit our impact on the environment already, in our current processes,” comments Sanjay Samaddar, President of the Board of ArcelorMittal Poland.
In recent years, ArcelorMittal has invested about PLN 700 million in green projects at the Dąbrowa Górnicza plant. The plant in Sosnowiec, Zdzieszowice (PLN 205 million), Kraków (PLN 100 million), etc. were also subject to modernization.
ArcelorMittal Poland plans to invest PLN 165 million ($40.9 million) in the modernization of the coke plant in Zdzieszowice. All works are expected to be completed by 2026.
As GMK Center reported earlier, in 2023, ArcelorMittal Poland invested PLN 1.5 billion ($363 million) in modernization and growth projects at three facilities to improve product quality, energy efficiency and plant efficiency. The largest amount was spent on modernizing the blast furnace in Dąbrowa Górnicza.
