ANNOUNCEMENT: Kallanish Steel Scrap 2025

The conference will discuss current issues of the world scrap market, forecasts of supply/demand and pricing in 2025

On February 13, Kallanish Steel Scrap 2025 conference will be held in Istanbul, Turkey.

The event will bring together participants in the global scrap market. Among the issues to be discussed are:

• how the global scrap market will change in the coming decades as economies such as China grow;
• whether the trend towards increased use of this raw material in blast furnaces will continue;
• how the construction of electric arc furnaces in the US and EU will affect the availability of scrap;
• whether Turkish plants will need to look for alternative raw materials to scrap;
• the impact of cargo transportation disruptions on the scrap trade;
  forecasts for scrap supply/demand and pricing in 2025.

Scrap is currently in the spotlight. For decades, this raw material has been a key input for Turkish and American mills. But now, with decarbonization influencing business decisions and recycling and the circular economy becoming a priority, scrap is in demand by everyone. As steel mills become more electrified, demand will only grow.

Will the growth in demand affect all scrap grades? Most likely, the quality of this raw material will be more important than its quantity. The difference between obsolete and premium steel grades is already much wider than it used to be.

In any case, nationalism regarding scrap resources remains a hotly debated topic. In 2024, the EU introduced the Waste Transport Regulation. It restricts the export of these raw materials to non-OECD countries unless they can prove that the material is handled sustainably. Will the bloc introduce further measures (export quotas, bans, etc.)?

Changing trends in scrap imports in India and China are also relevant. India has become the second largest importer of scrap after Turkey, and these volumes are growing every year, while Turkey’s volumes are fluctuating. However, the Asian country is looking to develop its domestic scrap recycling infrastructure to meet its growing steel capacity. Meanwhile, China is easing restrictions on imports of this raw material.
